Chapter 12 Excerpt

At Your Service
Although the UK is not as service-oriented as the States, there are some services to be found! You might need a "char" or a "daily" to help around the house. And do you know which day the "dustmen" come - and indeed, what they'll expect from you when they do? In this chapter, I'll walk you through everything from the infamous medical service, to how to buy stamps and where to go to have your car serviced. Just don't expect the 24/7 types of amenities you find in the States, and you'll be fine!
"Beauty - A surreptitious inspection of hands will quickly tell you that manicurists are thinner on the ground than in the US. A manicure is not quite the priority that it is in the States, and British women in general, don't go in for much more than a straightforward manicure. If you're looking for elaborate nail extensions and live in a small town or village, you may have to venture into a larger town. "Men do not have manicures!" Most hair stylists will probably have a manicurist on board, but you won't find a separate manicure store on every street corner.
"Hair salons are just as plentiful as here, and just as pricey. When explaining to the hairdresser how you'd like your hair cut, remember that the word "bangs" is totally unknown in the UK. It's your 'fringe'."
