Chapter 13 Excerpt

Managing With Small Children

The UK is a very child friendly place in terms of getting around.   Special seats on buses, designated parking spots at the mall, (for the parent that is!), and excellent changing facilities everywhere you go.   As usual, there are minefields a-plenty in this chapter, such as singing the wrong words to your child's favorite nursery rhyme, or calling a well-known game "Tic-Tac-Toe" instead of its British name.

"British kids eat a lot of things on toast, which always seems to revolt Americans.   I personally love scrambled or poached eggs, or baked beans on toast but my American kids have yet to see the light.    Yours may also voice some resistance, but you might as well be warned that they will be served this concoction at some point.

"The one British staple that you might want to exercise caution with is Marmite; generally scraped over buttered toast, it is a very salty strong tasting, yeast-extract spread that you definitely have to have a taste for.   Kids all over the UK have been raised on Marmite "soldiers" (thin strips of toast) with little or no problems!"
