Chapter 2 Excerpt

Words That Guarantee Confusion

Here, you'll find numerous common American phrases, which mean nothing in the UK, (e.g. "boondoggle"), and English phrases that will totally flummox Americans, such as "It's a doddle".

This chapter can double as a dinner party game when both Americans and Brits are present.   Ask each other the meaning of the phrases and the guesses will be hilarious.

Or - you could start off a lively debate by discussing the meaning of a well-known word.   For example "to visit" in the UK only ever means that you physically go to visit a person or a national monument.   It would never be used to sit and chat, as in "Come over here and visit with me".   The response would be "Who are we visiting?"
