Chapter 20 Excerpt

Crime and Violence
Although overall a less violent place to live, there are certain crimes that you will succumb to far more regularly in the UK. Statistically, you're much more likely to experience property damage via theft, than you are harm to your own person. On the lighter side, this chapter gives many examples of the colorful slang associated with law enforcement or lawbreakers. The "Old Bill" refers to the police force, and a "jam sandwich" is actually a police car. Explanations are provided!
"Statistics show (and personal experience tells me) that you're much more likely to have your car and/or house broken into in the UK. Always lock all doors and windows when you leave the house either at night or during the day. Many Brits don't even sleep with their bedroom windows open unless they have top windows that are too small for a human to squeeze through. If living in a house in the UK, check the insurance policy; some insurers will not cover you if it is discovered that your alarm wasn't switched on when the house was burglarized (burgled)".
